New Orleans Shopping

(Try keyword "Women's Fashions" or a ZIP code)

Big Easy shopping -– like everything else in New Orleans -- has its own Cajun style. Area malls and department stores such as Dillard's and Macy's thrive, yet old-world marketplace traditions with one-of-a-kind shops remain in vogue, providing originality, charm, and intrigue characterizing the Crescent City. Downtown or Uptown, Big Easy convenience of strolling store to store is topped only by readily available finds and treasures inside. Historic districts are packed with specialty shops, boutiques, galleries, cafés, and restaurants. Downtown's French Market survives among America's oldest operating public markets. Its Royal Street is famed for antiques and jewelry. The Warehouse / Arts District -- the "SoHo of the South" -– beckons with art galleries and New Orleans' farmers market, with jams, vinegars, olive oils, and more.

The Bywater / Marigny area below the French Quarter also doubles as a shopper's haven. The Riverwalk Marketplace, with more than 140 enterprises, provides casual fun and a big food court, and the Shops at Canal Place next to the French Quarter hosts some 50 designer boutiques from Saks Fifth Avenue and Brooks Brothers to Kenneth Cole, Gucci, and L'Occitane. Magazine Street -- the "Street of Dreams" -- yields a half dozen miles of boutiques, art studios, galleries, spas, restaurants and cafés, from sophisticated to down-at-the-heel chic. Overall, shops are filled with plantation furniture, china, crystal and silver, 19th century jewels and original contemporary jewelry, apparel, and artwork by regional artisans. Designers in evidence include New Orleans' own Elsa Peretti. Vintage shops offer carnival costumes, linen suits, and old straw hats. Stationery shops stock Alexa Pulitzer's note cards featuring palmetto plants, crowns, and gators, along with works by glass makers, potters, metal designers, and furniture makers.

New Orleans coffee such as French Quarter or Union along with Creole mustards and dozens of hot sauces such as Tabasco are on supermarket shelves. Pralines in special flavors, pecan clusters, and taffy are made fresh at Aunt Sally's Creole Pralines on Royal Street, Pralines by Jean on St. Charles, Praline Connection on South Peters, or Evans Candy Company and Southern Candymakers, each on Decatur. The Esplanade near the airport has more than 140 specialty shops along with Macy's, Dillard's, and Mervyn's. Lakeside Shopping center has more than 120 stores, Oakwood center has nearly 130 stores, and the Shops at Jax Brewery, with Chico's and the Big Easty T-Shirt Co., has four floors of stores, kiosks, and eateries. The Tanger Outlet Center has more than 50 upscale stores with designer apparel.
